Brian Torrance

A bit about Brian...

Brian is incredibly honoured to be the new Director with Ever Active Schools.  Brian
brings a great passion for school and community health to the position and believes in the power that schools have in building healthier populations.  Brian grew up in North Vancouver before calling Edmonton home in 2001.  Brian graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelors of Physical Education and Recreation (BPE) in 2002 and then a Master's of Science in the Department of Medicine (MSc) in 2007.  Through his Master's degree and for the last 8 years Brian has led the Healthy Hearts Research Study that has shown the great strides that can be made with partnerships and support from the entire school community.  Brian believes that finding the right recipe for school health involves teamwork, communication and bringing everyone together to build health into our everyday environment.  Brian is an avid runner,
competing in provincial road races, coaching athletes, assisting with mass participation
physical activity based events, and still "hopes" his best marathon times are ahead of him.

Vicki Switzer

A bit about Vicki...

Vicki is incredibly excited about her secondment from the Calgary Board of Education to the Project Coordinator for Ever Active Schools.  Vicki is passionate in her pursuit of finding balance in her life and has found fitness and nutrition contributes greatly to her mental well-being.  She is a native Calgarian who graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelors of Physical Education.  In 2009, she received her Masters of Counseling, specializing in school counseling.  She comes to EAS with 23 years teaching experience in a variety of settings.  Remaining steadfast through various roles and settings has been her love for being active, promoting healthy choices and being an advocate for student and staff wellness.

Vicki's most recent race challenge was the Calgary City Chase and she is looking forward to completing the half marathon in San Fransisco in October.

Tracy Lockwood

A bit about Tracy...

Tracy Lockwood graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education majoring in Secondary Physical Education.  She has over 11 years of teaching experience from Grades 1-9 and has coached numerous athletic teams in the past.  During her 3 years with Schools Come Alive and Ever Active Schools, Tracy has developed numerous resources for Daily Physical Activity, Physical Education and Health and has facilitated workshops at the provincial, national and international level.  She has recently received training to deliver Fundamental Movement Skills workshops to Community Leaders for the National Coaching Certification Program.

Communication Coordinator

Shannon Horricks

A bit about Shannon...


Shannon obtained her Bachelor of Education degree f rom the University of Alberta with a degree in ElementaryEducation, minoring in Educational Psychology.  She taught elementary for six years, during which she taught gra des 1-6 and coached various sports teams.  In her current position with Ever Active Schools and Battle River School Division, Shannon Horricks works on a daily basis to build relationships, facilitate workshops and communicate the message of physical activity, healthy eating and positive mental well-being. She brings energy and enthusiasm to her presentations.  Most recently she was the recepient of PHE Canada's Andy Anderson Young Professional Award.  Her love of teaching is evident, not only with her previous students, but with her group fitness classes.  Shannon can usually be seen training for an upcoming race of some sort.  In fact, her latest challenge was taking on The Canadian Death Race and is currently training to complete the MS Mountain Bike Tour. Shannon will challenge you and help you reach your potential.

School Coordinator

Joyce Sunada

A bit about Joyce...

Joyce Sunada is entering her third year with Ever Active Schools as School Coordinator and is enjoying this position immensely.  Her passion for activity has inspired many individuals to embark on a Healthy Active Lifestyle.  Joyce has spent many hours travelling the highways of Alberta, presenting workshops and cultivating lasting partnerships.  One consistent message she shares is the importance of teachers, administrators and leaders to “Walk the Talk”.  Role modeling is one of the most powerful ways to empower others to improve their lifestyle.  Since joining EAS Joyce has broadened her active pursuits. She has experienced Spin, Pilates,  and Tai Chi classes.  She endured sessions with a personal trainer and tried her skill at Rock Climbing.  This winter she plans to venture back out to the ski hill to rekindle that youthful adventure.
“I now understand the follow quote,” Sunada says, “You don’t stop playing cause you get old, you get old cause you stop playing.” “I really have a lot more energy and zest for life since I started exploring these new activities and I intend on continuing this trend.

A bit about Rhonda...

Rhonda has been working with EAS for over three years and is looking forward to attending her fourth HPEC conference.  She is responsible for keeping the office running smoothly as well as ensuring that program staff get to where they are supposed to be with what they need!  Rhonda enjoys hanging out with her husband and teenage kids - at home, at the lake or in Vegas.

A bit about Karen...

Karen was initially the Administrative Assistant with Schools Come Alive (SCA) since September 2007.  When the merger between SCA and Ever Active Schools occurred we were fortunate to have Karen stay on and join the team. 
Prior to working for SCA she was a full-time mom raising her two very active children.  Karen graduated from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario with a Diploma in Legal Office Administration and worked in the legal field as a Corporate Law Clerk for 15 years.   Karen is an integral part of Ever Active Schools and is thrilled to be part of the team.
